The Solar Dome and its Chrysalis, a Jewel Nestled in a Stone Vessel
First Prize Winner of the International Competition, City of Luxembourg
In October 2016, Vincent Callebaut Architectures was named first prize winner of the international competition with its project "Metamorphosis of the Hotel des Postes". The two-phase competition was launched in December 2015 by POST Luxembourg, the historic owner of the building. In June 2017, the Ministry of the Economy (Ministry of POST Supervision) and the City of Luxembourg validated - by agreement in principle - the shape of the dome culminating at 35.5 meters, instead of the initial 40 meters. Project programming is still under discussion by local authorities. The VCA's project has been finally abandoned.

Taking a stand for a mixed history, having audacity for others, the architect's role goes far beyond conservation or restoration.
Metamorphosis architects, we are - above all - surgeons, repairing wounds and heterogeneous growths of this vessel of stone and reinforced concrete, designed by the State Architect Sosthène Weis between 1905 and 1910. At the heart of a group of prestigious buildings impregnated with the urban fabric of the City of Luxembourg, we surgically operate a respectful sorting between the historical volumes of the building and the functional additions that have accumulated during the 20th century, from the inner court to the gangrenous roofs.
Our goal? Reveal the intrinsic heritage qualities of the building and highlight them with contemporary architecture that assumes its era.
Then, act as futurists to propel the Hotel des Postes towards the 21st century in terms of use, comfort, technological and social progress, and innovative and sustainable constructive principles. The vast Royal-Hamilius project, designed by British architect Norman Foster, now has an elegant trapezoidal square opening towards the main facade of the Hotel des Postes. This place has encouraged us to merge this fabulous heritage with pro-active, contemporary architecture.
Today, architecture is able to implement the concept of "Energy Solidarity" between a historical heritage combined with a contemporary project. The latter provides the energy needed for the first by integrating bioclimatism and renewable energies to achieve an environmentally neutral carbon footprint as recommended by COP 21.
Our leitmotivs are offering Luxemburgers a new landmark that perfectly fits urban life, strengthening the centrality of the Place Royal-Hamilius, preserving the line of vision from the Boulevard Royal and its future tramway station, and creating a signature project for Post, our client and historical owner of this building!
The first ideas in February 2016 on the theme of the Metamorphosis of the Hotel des Postes brought up two hypotheses, both aimed at an in-depth remodeling of the interior courtyard of the building by removing the extensions made respectively in 1925, 1952, and 1976.
The first hypothesis is optimizing the floor area by integrating an oblong volume in the heart of the courtyard, like a chrysalis. From the Place Royal-Hamilius, the chrysalis suggests delicately its emerging upper curve above the ridge of the main facade on Aldringen Street. At the heart of the open courtyard, the historic facades would be restored identically to establish a frank dialogue between the past and the future, between the architectural details of the Neo-Renaissance style of Sosthène Weis and an organic architecture with voluptuous curves. On the first floor, this tower would be placed on a minimum of intersecting pilings, visually and spatially freeing the area and allowing a very large, open flow between Rue de La Poste, Rue Aldringen and Avenue Monterey.
The second hypothesis is covering the courtyard with a glass dome, transforming it into an atrium, protected from climatic hazards. This dome would be pixelated with photovoltaic cells, energetically autonomizing this historic building. In this hypothesis, complementary floors would cling to the inner facades of the courtyard around a central tree structure, constituting a huge wind chimney which would passively bioclimate the entire atrium.
Faced with these two complementary hypotheses, the choice of the multidisciplinary team was to merge the advantages of each option by transversely working on combining the two!
Since then, we have developed a chrysalis covered with a solar dome that conforms to the contours of the inner courtyard and is perfectly waterproof and airtight. This fusion of the chrysalis and the solar dome makes it possible to densify the mixed programming of the whole, while offering comfortable, naturally bioclimatized spaces.
Between history and modernity, between heritage and innovation, this metamorphosis presents a project reinforcing the patrimonial identity of the place by transforming the historic building into a showcase of contemporary, ecological architecture. Low-Tech and High-Tech are therefore in tune to serve this exceptional project.
On the programmatic level, the new Hotel des Postes is organized as follows:
In the basement, a large, new generation Post-Store with a coffee shop takes place under a double height ceiling. It can be accessed using a structural glass staircase centered on the entrance to the main facade of the historic building.
On the first floor, there is a brewery and a restaurant opening onto the Place Royal-Hamilius. On the mezzanine and the second floor, a vast retail enhances the views of the restored facades of the Neo-Renaissance courtyard.
From the second to the fifth floor, large co-working spaces are placed between offices, partitioned in the historic crown and open spaces and meeting rooms in the chrysalis. In the most recent North-East wing, flexible and mutable housing has been incorporated at the request of the City of Luxembourg.
Starting at the sixth floor, at the level of the kitchen-garden and its large rooftop terraces, a triplex open to the public with dedicated access hosts a restaurant and a panoramic bar. It will offer all Luxembourgers, and tourists passing through, a breathtaking 360-degree vue of the skyline towards the most beautiful monuments of the city.
This program, whose economic profitability has been proven, will be optimized with all project stakeholders.
The Hotel des Postes is now the heritage epicenter of the new urban context boosted by the project "Royal-Hamilius" in full construction. According to Codic, the developer of this new urban Royal-Hamilius project, the goal is to "respond to the aspirations of the inhabitants of Luxembourg and contribute to the international reputation of the city by reinforcing its commercial attractiveness and enhancing its cultural and historical heritage". In the same perspective of urban articulation between the Royal Boulevard and the Historical Center, our project will create a ball joint between the flows that cross through a complementary programming to Codic's project. The whole will form a pleasant neighborhood to live in, multifunctional and multicultural on a human scale.
The Creation of a Pedestal :
The first strong action made to the existing building is located on the main facade of the Hotel des Postes, rue Aldringen. In order to truly anchor the building at Place Royal-Hamilius, we are proposing to construct a pedestal, whose finished level corresponds to the first floor of the building. Strictly respecting the owner's withdrawals and property limits, it notably allows people with reduced mobility access to the brewery, the Post-Store, and the retail.
This large, new terrace slightly overhangs the gently sloping square to the tram stop on the Boulevard Royal. We can already imagine sitting comfortably on the wooden deck, sipping an aperitif while watching the sunset. This pedestal will dynamically participate in the life of this new Luxembourg place.
Reorganization of Distinct and Permeable Entrances :
Rue de la Poste, the three archways are lowered, allowing a greater fluidity towards the inner courtyard of the Hotel des Postes. To the right of the archways is the entrance lobby of the co-working spaces. To the left of the archways, a new hall connected to the existing stairwell is created to access the housing directly.
Avenue Monterey, the large porch directly accesses the panoramic triplex located at the top of the chrysalis and sky-garden by taking a Chambord double staircase integrated in the East wing.
Open flows, easy-access entrances, the facades of the new Hotel des Postes have been opened to the public space to participate in the conviviality and viability of the neighborhood in full conversion.
The Bloom of a Permaculture Rooftop Sky Garden :
Leave the sidewalks to rise to the sky and discover the hanging orchard rooted on the new roof of the Hotel des Postes. Our intention is to standardize the roofs of the "Royal-Hamilius + Hotel des Postes" building by creating a landscape continuity through the green roofs of each building. The whole will form an urban coherence repatriating plants and biodiversity into the heart of the city on the "fifth facades".
Concretely, we are creating a vegetable garden and an organic orchard dedicated to permaculture on the roof of the building. This nursery garden will provide excellent thermal insulation and will harvest rainwater for automated plantation irrigation.
The successful development of the telecommunications sector resulted in the construction of the Hotel des Postes. The complex was born in the era of the Neo-Renaissance and revived the idea of a "National Architecture".
The Hotel des Postes offers the viewer an image of a coherent set of buildings from the public space. In the inner courtyard is an undistinguishable, heterogeneous construction, due to the constructive forms and the differences in the facades, which indicates that the latter have successively evolved.
Our goal as part of the Metamorphosis is to enhance the intrinsic heritage of the building by implementing the following actions:
Removing Parasitic Elements from the Streets :
Our project proposes systematic cleaning of skylights, canopies, and the removal of other pests present on the roofs and streets to reinforce the emblematic and historical Renaissance image. Special care will be given to the woodwork, in consultation with the Service of National Sites and Monuments, so as to find the darker colors (rather than the current lighter colors) and the finesse of the original profiles. Currently, we favor fine woodwork with a gray-anthracite color, which perfectly matches the slate roofs and highlights the architectural details of the natural stone facades with its warm color.
The Reconstruction of the Courtyard Facades and the Enhancement of Architectural Details :
Following the successive architectural transplants, mainly during the 3rd part of the 20th century, we propose restoring the historic facades on the courtyard with their ledges, their carved window frames recalling the work done on street facades, and their dormer windows covered with slates. The repetitive rhythm of the facade modules will be reconstituted. All ornamental moldings, arches, and pillars will be restored as much as possible.
Saving the Heritage of the Interior Design :
During our site visit in February 2016, some of the interior design details challenged us with their originality, showing off the history of the building. These elements, such as the two beautiful stone and wrought iron staircases, the woodwork of the door frames of the offices, or the signage device of the historic elevator, are saved in our space-planning blueprints.
From a construction technology point of view, the architect Sosthène Weis showed openness and a keen interest in the technological innovations of the early 20th century. The most ultramodern technique of the time, reinforced concrete, was used for this building so that wide spaces were possible. The architect combined this method of construction with the traditional construction of brick masonry to create a natural stone facade.
In our opinion, the Hotel des Postes must continue to symbolize the right symbiosis between the past and the future, between history and modernity. This right balance will be cultivated through our project, which magnifies each era by establishing a harmonious dialogue between them.
We have drawn a symbol that marks the entrance to the historic center while fitting in with the contemporary architecture of the Royal-Hamilius project. The fusion of the two initial hypotheses, the chrysalis and the solar dome, led us to design an emblematic project whose only summit - like the tip of an iceberg - can be seen from the public space outside the building.
The solar dome deformed by the chrysalis tower curves erectly over the inner courtyard. This light and contemporary architecture, configured by current technologies, is implemented in BIM (Building Information Modeling) to better tame its ingenuity. Light and airy, this fluid-lined architecture will establish a seductive dialogue with the massive stone vessel whose robust scope reminds us of the old fortifications formerly located on the Boulevard Royal.
The dialogue between eras is therefore more preferable than a historical monologue and comes to definitively translate the 108 years of architectural evolutions and uses of the Hotel des Postes around the motto "Innovation".
The chrysalis will consist of a light, metal-framed gridshell and honeycomb beams to let maximum light into the yard while releasing the boards from any point. It will form a jewel coiled in a mineral and vegetable case.
Designing a carbon neutral architecture based on the "cradle to cradle" circular economy.
Taking into account the intrinsic carbon emissions and drawing up the energy balance of the life of the building, from its construction to its complete "recyclability" through its exploitation.
Repatriating an edible nature to the heart of the city as well as the fauna and flora of the endemic biodiversity of Luxembourg.
Using renewable energies (solar, wind, and biomass) and integrating the rules of passive bioclimatism (natural ventilation, evapotranspiration of plants) at the heart of the design process.
These are the ideas that allow us today to project the Hotel des Postes towards a resilient 21st century, with low carbon and greenhouse gas emissions.
Work on the Envelope, Inertia and, Airtightness of the Building :
The first step is reducing the energy needs of the building. The building envelope acts as a filter regarding the outside: it must block out the strong seasonal temperature variations. The insulation, airtightness, and overall inertia of the building are therefore key elements in the good design of our project.
The woodwork and glazing are replaced by double-glazing with strong frames, especially concerning the airtightness. The inner courtyard is covered, limiting thermal losses. The thermal inertia of the outer and inner vertical walls, as well as the floors, plays a major role in the stability of the interior microclimate.
Energy Consumption Goals :
Our objective is a consumption of heating, cooling, DHW (domestic hot water), lighting, and auxiliary posts at less than 30 kWh of final energy/m²/year, and an energy balance, that is to say, the difference between consumption and renewable electricity generation, at close to zero.
The performance of the implemented systems is as follows:
Passive systems :
Canadian Wells and Evapotranspiration : The inner courtyard is naturally ventilated. It is refreshed by the evapotranspiration of plants from the green wall and the supply of fresh air from the Canadian wells (about 8,000 m3/h, i.e. 7,400 mm diameter tubes approximately 20 to 30 m long). In winter, additional heating is provided by heated flooring.
Control of the Incoming Fresh Air :
Office air handling systems, meeting rooms that gain energy from the extracted air. The aeraulic networks of the meeting rooms and open spaces are equipped with motorized control modules handled by CO2 probes, optimizing the fresh air flow required for these premises. The cooling desiccant system reduces the refrigeration capacity by almost 30% for air treatment and also makes it possible to enhance trigeneration heat.
Terminal Equipment - Low Temperature :
The terminal equipment for climate treatment are reversible hot/cold ceilings made of perforated steel boards. Its power makes it possible to handle the internal and external loads of all the premises.
Use of Local Renewable Energies
The renewable energies solicited to meet the needs of the project are photovoltaic energy, wind energy, and biomass.
The production of heat, cold, and electricity is mainly ensured by a biomass trigeneration of 98 kW of heat and 75 kW of electricity: cogeneration with rapeseed oil associated with a refrigeration machine, with an absorption of 50 kW of cold.
In addition, the 800 m² solar dome (glass flakes with 15/15 silicon cells in the double glazing inclined between 10° and 60°) produces, with 75% of the effective surface, up to 70,800 kWh/year (590 m² x 120 kWh/year).
Finally, a wind farm of 20 "UGE / Vision Air 3" vertical axis wind turbines (VAWT) is also installed, the estimated annual production is 770 kWh x 20 wind turbines, or 15,400 kWh/year.
Energy Balance :
Passive means, renewable energies are used preferentially to limit the use of conventional energy consumption while maintaining the occupants' comfort.
Total non-renewable energy consumption is less than 30 kWh of final energy/m²/year. The non-renewable energies balance tangents the equilibrium once the share of renewable electricity production has been deducted.
The sustainability of a building is not only energy!
It lies above all in its spatial flexibility over time. The technical, structural, and domotic innervation must enable it to recompose its interior design to infinity. Thus, the technique disappears in double-floor and double-wall systems which frees the spaces of retail and offices, adjusting the building to the changing uses.
For example, like a termite mound, we propose integrating Canadian wells into the thickness of the double-walled libraries. The technique becomes invisible by optimizing the use of wide corridors that surround the inner courtyard of the building.

Projet Lauréat du Concours International
En octobre 2016, l’agence Vincent Callebaut Architectures a été désignée lauréate du concours international avec son projet de « Métamorphose de l’Hôtel des Postes ». Le concours en deux phases a été lancé en décembre 2015 par POST Luxembourg, propriétaire historique de l’édifice. En juin 2017, le Ministère de l’Economie (Ministère de Tutelle de POST) et la Ville du Luxembourg ont validé - par un accord de principe - la géométrie du dôme culminant à 35,5 mètres au lieu de 40 mètres initialement. La programmation du projet est toujours en cours de discussion par les autorités locales.Le projet VCA a été finalement abandonné.
Métamorphoser, c’est transformer la chenille en papillon.
Métamorphoser, ce n’est pas faire table rase du passé mais bien au contraire intégrer le meilleur de chaque époque à notre avenir.
Métamorphoser c’est prendre parti pour une histoire à écrire plutôt qu’une autre.
Métamorphoser c’est faire le choix de juger quels éléments du passé composeront le socle d’un futur à imaginer.
Prendre position pour une histoire métissée, avoir de l’audace non pas pour soi mais pour les autres, c’est le rôle de l’architecte bien au-delà de la simple conservation ou restauration.
Architectes de la métamorphose, nous nous faisons - avant tout - chirurgiens pour réparer les plaies et excroissances hétérogènes de ce vaisseau de pierre et de béton armé dessiné par l’Architecte d’Etat Sosthène Weis entre 1905 et 1910. Au cœur d’un ensemble de bâtiments prestigieux dont s’imprègne le tissu urbain de la Ville de Luxembourg, nous opérons chirurgicalement un tri respectueux entre les volumes historiques de l’édifice et les ajouts fonctionnels qui se sont accumulés au cours du 20ème siècle depuis la cour intérieure jusqu’aux toitures gangrénées.
Notre but ? Révéler les qualités intrinsèques patrimoniales de l’édifice et les magnifier par une architecture contemporaine qui assume son époque.
Ensuite, nous agissons comme des prospectivistes pour propulser l’Hôtel des Postes vers le 21ème siècle en termes d’usages, de confort, d’avancées technologiques et sociales, et de principes constructifs innovants et durables. Le vaste projet Royal-Hamilius conçu par l’architecte britannique Norman Foster consacre désormais une élégante place trapézoïdale s’ouvrant vers la façade principale de l’Hôtel des Postes. Cette place nous a ainsi incités à marier ce fabuleux patrimoine avec une architecture contemporaine pro-active et non plus inerte.
En effet, l’architecture est capable aujourd’hui de mettre en œuvre le concept de « Solidarité Energétique » entre un patrimoine historique allié à un projet contemporain. Le second fournissant l’énergie nécessaire au premier par l’intégration du bioclimatisme et des énergies renouvelables pour atteindre un bilan carbone neutre sur le plan environnemental comme le recommande la COP 21.
Offrir au Luxembourgeois un nouveau landmark parfaitement couturé au tissu urbain, renforcer la centralité de la Place Royal-Hamilius, préserver les axes de vision depuis le Boulevard Royal et sa future station de tramways, générer un projet signature pour Post notre Maître d’Ouvrage et propriétaire historique de ce bâtiment, tels sont nos leitmotivs !
Dès les premières réflexions menées en février 2016 sur le thème de cette Métamorphose de l’Hôtel des Postes sont apparues deux hypothèses, toutes deux visant à remodeler en profondeur la cour intérieure du bâtiment en l’évidant des extensions subies respectivement en 1925, 1952 et 1976.
La première hypothèse est d’optimiser la surface de plancher en intégrant un volume oblong au cœur de la cour, une véritable chrysalide. Celle-ci suggère à la Place Royal-Hamilius la délicate émergence de son galbe supérieur au-dessus du faîte de la façade principale sur la rue Aldringen. Au cœur de la cour à ciel ouvert, les façades historiques seraient reconstituées à l’identique pour établir un dialogue franc entre le passé et le futur, entre les détails architectoniques de style Néo-Renaissance de Sosthène Weis et une architecture organique aux courbes voluptueuses. Au rez-de-chaussée, cette tour serait déposée sur un minimum de pilotis entrecroisés libérant l’espace de toute contrainte spatiale et visuelle et permettant une très grande perméabilité des flux entre la Rue de La Poste, la Rue Aldringen et l’Avenue Monterey.
La seconde hypothèse que nous avons émise propose de recouvrir la cour par un dôme de verre, la transformant en un véritable atrium protégé des aléas climatiques. Ce dôme est pixélisé de cellules photovoltaïques offrant au bâtiment historique son autonomie énergétique. Dans cette hypothèse, des plateaux complémentaires viennent s’accrocher aux façades intérieures de la cour autour d’une structure arborescente centrale constituant une immense cheminée à vent permettant de bioclimatiser passivement l’ensemble de l’atrium.
Face à ces deux hypothèses complémentaires, le choix de l’équipe multidisciplinaire fût - non pas de privilégier l’une à l’autre en les opposant - mais au contraire de fusionner les avantages de chaque option en travaillant transversalement sur la synthèse des deux en une !
Dès lors, nous avons élaboré une chrysalide recouverte d’un dôme solaire épousant les contours de la cour intérieure rendue ainsi parfaitement étanche à l’eau et à l’air. Cette fusion de la chrysalide et du dôme solaire permet ainsi de densifier la programmation mixte de l’ensemble tout en proposant des espaces confortables bioclimatisés naturellement.
Entre histoire et modernité, entre patrimoine et innovation, cette métamorphose propose donc un projet renforçant l’identité patrimoniale du lieu en transformant le bâtiment historique en un véritable écrin d’une architecture contemporaine écologique. Low-Tech et High-Tech sont ainsi au diapason pour servir ce projet d’exception.
Sur le plan programmatique, le nouvel Hôtel des Postes s’organise comme suit :
Au sous-sol, un vaste Post-Store nouvelle génération assorti d’un coffee shop prend place sous une double hauteur. On y accède depuis un escalier en verre structurel axé sur l’entrée de la façade principale du bâtiment historique.
Au rez-de-chaussée, prennent place une brasserie et un restaurant s’ouvrant vers la Place Royal-Hamilius. En mezzanine et au premier étage, un vaste retail sublime les points de vue sur les façades restaurées de la cour intérieure néo-renaissance.
Du premier au quatrième étage, de généreux espaces de co-working s’articulent entre des bureaux cloisonnés dans la couronne historique et des open spaces et salles de réunions dans la chrysalide. Dans la plus récente aile Nord-Est, des logements flexibles et mutables ont été intégrés à la demande de la Ville du Luxembourg.
A partir du cinquième étage, au niveau du potager-verger et de ses larges terrasses en rooftop, un triplex ouvert au public avec accès dédié accueille un restaurant et un bar panoramique. Il offrira à tous les luxembourgeois et aux touristes de passage une vue imprenable à 360 degrés vers la skyline et les plus beaux monuments de la ville.
Cette programmation dont la rentabilité économique a été prouvée sera optimisée avec tous les acteurs du projet.
L’Hôtel des Postes constitue aujourd’hui l’épicentre patrimonial du nouveau contexte urbain dynamisé par le projet « Royal-Hamilius » en plein chantier. Selon Codic, le développeur de ce nouveau projet urbain Royal-Hamilius, l’ambition est de «répondre aux aspirations des habitants du Luxembourg et de contribuer à la renommée internationale de la ville en renforçant son attractivité commerciale et en valorisant son patrimoine culturel et historique». S’inscrivant dans la même perspective d’articulation urbaine entre le Boulevard Royal et le Centre Historique, notre projet vient constituer une rotule entre les flux qui le traversent à travers une programmation complémentaire au projet de Codic. Le tout formera ainsi un quartier agréable à vivre, multifonctionnel et multiculturel à échelle humaine.
La création d’un Piédestal :
Le premier geste fort que nous apportons à l’existant se trouve en façade principale de l’Hôtel des Postes, rue Aldringen. En effet, afin d’ancrer véritablement l’édifice à la Place Royal-Hamilius, nous proposons la construction d’un « piédestal » dont le niveau fini correspond au rez-de-chaussée de l’édifice. Respectant rigoureusement les retraits et limites de propriété du Maître d’Ouvrage, il permet notamment l’accès des personnes à mobilité réduite vers la brasserie, le Post-Store et le retail.
Cette nouvelle grande terrasse surplombe légèrement la place en pente douce vers l’arrêt du tramway sur le Boulevard Royal. On s’imagine déjà confortablement assis sur le deck en bois en train de siroter l’apéro face au coucher de soleil. Ce piédestal participe ainsi dynamiquement à la vie de cette nouvelle place luxembourgeoise.
La réorganisation d’entrées distinctes et perméables :
Rue de la Poste, les trois arcades sont rabaissées permettant une plus grande fluidité vers la cour intérieure de l’Hôtel des Postes. A droite des arcades, on trouve le lobby d’entrée des espaces de co-working. A gauche des arcades, un nouveau hall connecté à la cage d’escalier existante est créé pour accéder directement aux logements.
Avenue Monterey, le grand porche donne accès directement au triplex panoramique situé en haut de la chrysalide et au sky-garden en empruntant un double-escalier de Chambord intégré dans l’aile Est.
Perméabilité des flux, lisibilités et distinction des entrées, les façades du nouvel Hôtel des Postes s’entrouvrent dès lors vers l’espace public pour participer à la convivialité et à la viabilité du quartier en pleine reconversion.
L’efflorescence d’un Sky Garden sur le toit destiné à la permaculture :
Quittons les trottoirs pour nous élever vers le ciel et découvrir le verger suspendu enraciné sur la nouvelle toiture de l'Hôtel des Postes. Notre volonté est d’uniformiser les toitures de l’ensemble ‘Royal-Hamilius + Hôtel des Postes’ en proposant une continuité paysagère à travers les toitures végétalisées de chaque immeuble. Le tout formera ainsi une cohérence urbaine rapatriant le végétal et la biodiversité au cœur de la cité sur les « cinquièmes façades ».
Concrètement nous créons un potager et un verger biologique voué à la permaculture sur le toit de l’édifice. Ce jardin nourricier assurera une excellente isolation thermique et permettra de récolter les eaux de pluie pour l’irrigation automatisée des plantations.
L’évolution prospère du secteur des télécommunications a abouti à la construction de l’Hôtel des Postes. Le complexe naît dans l’ère du temps de la Néo-Renaissance et fait renaitre l’idée d’une « Architecture Nationale ».
L’Hôtel des Postes offre au spectateur une image d’un ensemble de bâtiments cohérent depuis l’espace public. Au contraire, on peut distinguer dans la cour intérieure une construction hétérogène, dues aux formes constructives et aux différences dans les façades, qui indique que celles-ci ont évolué successivement.
Notre objectif dans le cadre de la Métamorphose est de sublimer le patrimoine intrinsèque de l’édifice en mettant en œuvre les actions suivantes :
Le gommage des éléments parasites sur rues :
Notre projet propose le gommage systématique des lucarnes, verrières et autres parasites présents sur les pans de toitures sur rues afin de renforcer l’image emblématique et historique de type Renaissance. Un soin tout particulier sera apporté aux menuiseries en concertation avec le Service des Sites et Monuments Nationaux afin de retrouver les couleurs plutôt sombres que claires (comme actuellement) et la finesse des profils originaux. Actuellement, nous privilégions des menuiseries fines de couleur gris-anthracite s’accordant parfaitement avec les toitures en ardoises et s’effaçant visuellement au profit des détails architectoniques des façades en pierre naturelle à la couleur chaude.
La reconstitution des façades sur cour et la valorisation des détails architectoniques :
Suite aux greffes architecturales successives, principalement durant le 3ème tiers du 20ème siècle, nous proposons de remettre en état les façades historiques sur cour avec leurs corniches filantes, leurs encadrements de fenêtre en pierre taillée rappelant le travail des façades sur rues et leurs chiens-assis couverts d’ardoises. Le rythme répétitif des modules de façade sera ainsi reconstitué. Toutes les moulures ornementales, les arcades, les piliers seront autant que possible remis en valeur.
La sauvegarde du patrimoine d’aménagement intérieur :
Lors de notre visite de site en Février 2016, certains détails de l’aménagement intérieur nous ont interpellés par leur originalité en nous racontant l’histoire du bâtiment. Ces éléments, telles que les deux très belles cages d’escaliers en pierre et en fer forgé, telles que les boiseries des encadrements de portes des bureaux, ou encore tel que le dispositif de signalétique de l’ascenseur historique, nous les sauvegardons dans nos plans de space-planning.
D’un point de vue de la technologie de la construction, l’architecte Sosthène Weis a fait preuve d’ouverture et d’un grand intérêt face aux innovations technologiques du début du 20ème siècle. En effet, la technique la plus ultramoderne de l’époque, le béton armé, fut utilisée pour ce bâtiment de telle sorte que de grandes portées fussent possibles. L’architecte combine ce mode de construction avec la construction traditionnelle en maçonnerie de briques avec parement de pierres naturelles en façade.
Selon nous, l’Hôtel des Postes doit continuer à symboliser la juste symbiose entre le passé et le futur, entre l’histoire et la modernité. Ce juste équilibre, nous le cultivons à travers notre projet qui magnifie chaque époque en établissant un dialogue harmonieux entre-elles.
Notre avons dessiné un symbole qui marque l’entrée vers le centre-historique tout en s’accordant avec l’architecture contemporaine du projet Royal-Hamilius. La fusion des deux hypothèses de départ, la chrysalide et le dôme solaire, nous a mené à concevoir un projet emblématique dont seul le sommet – comme la partie émergée d’un iceberg - est perceptible depuis l’espace public à l’extérieur du bâtiment.
En effet, le dôme solaire déformé par la tour chrysalide vient ériger un mouvement tout en courbes au-dessus de la cour intérieure. Cette architecture légère et contemporaine, paramétrée par les technologies actuelles, est mise en œuvre en BIM (Building Information Modeling) pour mieux apprivoiser son ingéniosité. Légère et aérienne, cette architecture aux lignes fluides viendra établir un dialogue séduisant avec le massif vaisseau de pierre dont la robuste volumétrie nous rappelle les anciennes fortifications situées autrefois sur le Boulevard Royal.
Le dialogue entre les époques est donc privilégié au monologue historique et vient traduire définitivement les 108 années d’évolutions architecturales et d’usages de l’Hôtel des Postes autour du mot d’ordre « Innovation ».
La chrysalide sera constituée d’une charpente métallique légère en gridshell et poutres alvéolaires afin de laisser rentrer un maximum de lumière dans la cour tout en libérant les plateaux de tout point porteur. Elle constituera un joyau lové dans un écrin minéral et végétal.
Concevoir une architecture à empreinte carbone neutre basée sur l’économie circulaire « cradle to cradle ».
Prendre en compte les émissions de carbone intrinsèque et dresser le bilan énergétique de la vie du bâtiment, de sa construction à sa « recyclabilité » complète en passant par son exploitation.
Rapatrier une nature comestible au cœur de la cité ainsi que la faune et la flore de la biodiversité endémique du Luxembourg.
Embarquer les énergies renouvelables (solaire, éolienne et biomasse) et intégrer les règles d’un bioclimatisme passif (ventilation naturelle, évapotranspiration des plantes) au cœur du processus de design.
Telles sont les trajectoires qui nous permettent dès aujourd’hui de projeter l’Hôtel des Postes vers un 21ème siècle résilient, sobre en carbone et en émission de gaz à effet de serre.
Le travail sur l’enveloppe, l’inertie et l’étanchéité à l’air du bâtiment :
La première étape est de réduire les besoins énergétiques du bâtiment. L’enveloppe du bâtiment joue le rôle de filtre vis-à-vis de l’extérieur : elle doit permettre de ne pas répercuter les fortes variations de températures saisonnières. Son isolation, son étanchéité à l’air, et l’inertie globale du bâtiment sont donc des éléments clés dans la bonne conception de notre projet.
Les menuiseries et vitrages sont remplacés par des double-vitrage avec châssis performants, notamment vis-à-vis de l’étanchéité à l’air. La cour intérieure est couverte limitant ainsi les déperditions thermiques. L’inertie thermique des parois verticales extérieures, intérieures, mais aussi des planchers joue un rôle majeur dans la stabilité du microclimat intérieur.
Les objectifs de consommation énergétique :
Notre objectif est une consommation des postes chauffage, rafraîchissement, ECS (Eau Chaude Sanitaire), éclairage et auxiliaires inférieure à 30 kWh énergie finale/m²/an, et un bilan énergétique, c’est-à-dire, la différence entre les consommations et la production d’électricité renouvelable, proche de zéro.
La performance des systèmes mis en place est la suivante :
Les systèmes passifs, puits canadiens et évapotranspiration :
La cour intérieure est ventilée naturellement. Elle est rafraîchie par l’évapotranspiration des plantes du mur végétal et l’amenée d’air frais provenant des puits canadiens (environ 8 000 m3/h, soit 7 tubes de diamètre 400 mm d’environ 20 à 30m de long). En hiver un complément de chauffage est apporté par les planchers rayonnants.
Le contrôle de l’air neuf apporté :
Les systèmes de traitement d’air des bureaux, salles de réunions permettent la récupération d’énergie sur l’air extrait. Les réseaux aérauliques des salles de réunions et des open spaces sont équipés de modules de régulation motorisés asservis à des sondes de CO2 afin d’optimiser le débit d’air neuf nécessaire pour ces locaux. Le système de dessicant cooling permet de réduire de près de 30% la puissance frigorifique pour le traitement d’air et permet également de valoriser la chaleur de la trigénération.
Les équipements terminaux - basse température :
Les équipements terminaux pour le traitement climatiques sont des plafonds réversibles chaud/froid de type bac acier perforé. La puissance permet de répondre en propre aux charges internes et externes de tous les locaux.
L’utilisation des énergies renouvelables locales :
Les énergies renouvelables sollicitées pour répondre aux besoins du projet sont l’énergie photovoltaïque, l’énergie éolienne et la biomasse.
La production de chaud, de froid et d’électricité est essentiellement assurée par une trigénération biomasse de 98 kW chaud et 75 kW électrique : cogénération à l’huile de colza associée à une machine frigorifique à absorption de 50 kW froid.
En complément, le dôme solaire de 800 m² (écailles de verre avec cellules de silicium 15/15 dans le double vitrage inclinées entre 10° et 60°) produit avec 75% de la surface efficiente jusque 70 800 kWh/an (590 m² x 120 kWh/an).
Enfin, une ferme éolienne de 20 éoliennes à axes verticales (VAWT) type "UGE / Vision Air 3" est également installée, la production annuelle estimée est de 770 kWh x 20 éoliennes, soit 15 400 kWh/an.
Le bilan énergétique :
Les moyens passifs, les énergies renouvelables sont utilisés de façon préférentielle afin de limiter le recours à la consommation des énergies conventionnelles tout en maintenant le confort des occupants.
Le total des consommations en énergies non renouvelables est inférieur à 30 kWh énergie finale/m²/an. Le bilan des énergies non-renouvelables tangente l’équilibre une fois déduite la part de la production d’électricité renouvelable.
La durabilité d’un bâtiment n’est pas qu’énergétique !
Elle réside avant tout dans sa flexibilité spatiale dans le temps. L’innervation technique, structurelle et domotique, doit lui permettre de recomposer à l’infini son aménagement intérieur. Ainsi la technique disparait dans des systèmes de double-plancher et de double-mur permettant de libérer les espaces de retail et de bureaux et par ce biais de s’ajuster au mieux à l’évolution des usages.
Par exemple, à l’image d’une termitière, nous proposons l’intégration de puits canadiens dans l’épaisseur des doubles-murs faisant office de bibliothèques. La technique devient ainsi invisible en optimisant l’utilisation des larges couloirs qui ceinturent la cour intérieure de l’édifice.
